Local Favorites

*********UNDER CONSTRUCTION**********

The Kanigel and Meredith families have been enjoying Kona for over twenty years.  Between the two families we spend a lot of time in Kona each year.    We have listed many of our favorite things to do on the island below.  Depending on your interests and how long you are staying some of the items below are sure to be of interest.

In addition to the items listed below, our favorite book is: Hawaii the Big Island Revealed by Andrew Doughty the 5th edition.

Classic Sites:

  • Sea Turtles and Snorkeling - best on island directly across the street at Kahaluu Beach Park.
  • Golf - Kona Country Club - 2 public courses including mountain and ocean - 5 minutes from condo.
  • Hawaii Volcano National Park - all day trip to the east side of island.
  • Waipio Valley - Need to take a tour or have your own 4wd vehicle.  The Black Sand beach is worth seeing for sure!
  • City of Refuge National Park -  historical landmark and cultural site - a peek into hawaiian history and culture.
  • Kealakekua Bay - great for sea kayaking. You can rent in town or along Highway 11.
  • Whale Watching - best with Captain Dan McSweeney's Whale Watch (808.322.0028)
  • Scuba Diving - Jack's Dive Shop
  • Horseback Riding - Kahala coast
  • Parker Ranch - Paniolo Culture
  • 7 International Observatories on Mona Kea

Nice activities that are less known:

Peace Sanctuary - 7 acres of tropical vegetation that interweave a  labyrinth to walk, a medicine wheel, peace poles, a representation of the milkey way created with hibiscus plants.
Holualoa town - small village, interesting and good quality art galleries, lovely Holualoa Cafe for lunch or dinner

Favorite Kona Restaurants:

Restaurants come and go on the Big Island so we will do our best to keep this updated with the latest info from our most recent visits!  But the places listed below are classic staples of Kona and are not likely to be going anywhere soon!  They are here to stay!

  • Kona Brewery - Great Pizza, salads, sandwiches, and obviously great brew!!!  Sunday nights they have local music!
  • Kona Inn - One of the best sunset views in town!!  Great MaiTai's and fish sandwiches!! THE BEST CALAMARI in town!!
  • Kenichi Gourmet Sushi - YUMMY!! Located in Keauhou Shopping Center
  • Keauhou Shopping Center - Just one mile south of the condo.  Fun Free weekly activities.  Friday night local Hula school presentations and weekday daytime events include Lei making, yukalele presentations all conducted by local Hawaiians.  Nice low key Hawaiian culture! Go to shopping center to check current listing and schedule of activities.

Great Massage: Sharon Forsyth - Akash Healing Center (808.989.5741.)  Need to Book in Advance.
